When you’re twisting and turning around the road to Hāna, the Waikamoi Ridge Trail appears to give you an easy hike to stretch your legs. There are actually a few trails here that form a small loop as well as several picnic areas and lookout points. This Nā Ala Hele trail is a great way to spend an hour for a short workout in a beautiful old-growth forest or a great spot for a picnic stop along the Highway. The Waikamoi Ridge Trail is on the eastern edge of the Waikamoi Preserve, which protects some of the oldest trees on Maui.

Trailhead: Near mile marker 9.5 along the Hāna Highway (Hwy. 360), find the signed turnout parking on the south side of the road. There is limited parking - do not block the main highway. The trailhead has no services.

Weather

Gear: Standard hiking gear. This area gets plenty of rain. Sturdy shoes are necessary for the muddy trails.

Hike: Find a picnic area adjacent to the parking area. Past the picnic area, climb on the Nature Trail on manmade steps and old roots. You’ll see a funny sign that says “Quiet: Trees At Work.” Bask in the greenery and climb to a lookout. From here, you can descend back to the trailhead or continue uphill to another picnic area at the top of the hike. You’ll pass a bamboo stand before entering a cleared area with grills and picnic tables. Return the way you came.
