Rugged Coastline

The Ohai Loop Trail is an excellent short hike on the north side of West Maui. This Nā Ala Hele trail is a great spot to stretch your legs while you are exploring West Maui and attempting to see several sights in one day. It is named for the ʻOhai plant, one of the many species you’ll find along the trail. The Ohai Loop Trail traverses rolling hills along the picturesque northern shore several hundred feet above the ocean. The hike travels adjacent to several eroded rock features along the sea cliffs. There’s also a short paved walk called the Overlook Trail that travels to a promontory with big views up and down the rugged coastline. This is a great spot to watch for whales in the winter.

Trailhead: On the north side of West Maui, follow Hwy. 30 and locate the trailhead for the Ohai Trail between mile markers 40 and 41. The parking area is on the north side of the highway and has room for about 5-6 cars. There are no services at this trailhead.

Weather

Gear: Standard hiking gear. The trail is rough, so sturdy shoes are appropriate. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.

Map

  • Overlook Trail: The Overlook Trail is an easy, paved walk to a small promontory. Find fencing at the end of the short trail. Enjoy the views and return the way you came. This walk is about one hundred yards.

  • Ohai Loop Trail: From the Overlook Trail, find the Ohai Trail departing to the east. Shortly encounter a trail split. This is the loop. It’s possible to do the loop in either direction. At the furthest point east, look for big views of the eroded cinder cone Kahakuloa Head (Pu'u Koa'e), an obvious West Maui landmark. There are a few benches along the way to sit and ponder. Follow the well-marked trail for a little over one mile and complete the loop.
